Final outcome and Evaluation.
In my original concept for this artwork, I had a complex narrative to explore involving a banana. However, during feedback and critiques, I was advised to simplify my approach, simplifying the concept and saving myself a lot of work. I was left questioning whether I was critiquing the art world itself or the broader concept of the banana in contemporary times.
"The Transient Banana" embodies the core of my thoughts and allows room for interpretation, encouraging viewers to find their own meaning in the artwork. The banana is clearly trying to transform itself into new and unfamiliar shapes within the context of the art world, adding personality and performance to my piece. While this is different to the original narrative, I trusted my instincts on where the project would lead.
While creating this project, I improved my stop-motion animation skills, particularly in photographing in a more controlled environment. In the future, I plan to use a photography studio for controlled lighting to avoid having to edit individual photos later. Additionally, I expanded my Photoshop skills by learning new techniques for layering and masking backgrounds to alter the overall image. In the future, I would like to take these skills to Premier Pro and other video editing softwares.
With more time, I would continue to create stop-motion animated scenes of the banana in different scenarios. I imagined him escaping the mouth of David Datuna while recreating 'The Comedian', which would be my next video project. This opens the possibility for a series following the adventures of the banana in individual segments, rather than trying to pack a whole storyline into an artwork.
I started this scene, as I had taken some stop-motion photography of the banana escaping the gaffa tape. This would be layered onto the video of the original Comedian Artwork being eaten.
While I wasn't able to find many artworks that the banana could visit and recreate while in London I had fun exploring the world with him. In the future, I would like to collect more photographs and stop-motion animation footage to build upon this original narrative, giving myself plenty of time for more gallery visits and banana adventures.
