Seminar - What is Art?

When exploring the question of "What is art?" we delve into a vast well of human expression, creativity, and interpretation. While dictionaries may offer definitions such as 'the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination', the essence of art transcends words, encompassing a diverse range of human activities and their resulting products. From painting and sculpture to literature and music, art encompasses various forms of creative expression that evoke beauty, emotion, and meaning.

However, defining art is not straightforward - it's a journey marked by ambiguity, uncertainty, and subjective interpretation. The line between art and craft, for instance, blurs as we contemplate the skill, mastery, and originality inherent in artistic processes. While some may argue for the importance of technical expertise, others champion the conceptual and innovative aspects of art, as exemplified by works like Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain" or Tracey Emin's "My Bed."

The notion of what constitutes an artist or artisan is similarly complex. Does creativity alone define an artist, or must they possess technical proficiency as well? And what about the role of experimentation in art - do artists create solely for themselves, or are they influenced by external factors and expectations?

Ultimately, the question of "What is art?" invites us to embrace uncertainty and ambiguity, challenging us to make our own decisions and evaluations. It's a question that defies easy answers, encouraging us to explore the boundaries of creativity and expression and to engage with the world around us in new and unexpected ways. And while we may never arrive at a definitive conclusion, the journey of inquiry itself is a testament to the enduring power and significance of art in our lives.
