I visited Refik Anadol's exhibition at the Serpentine North Gallery during a trip to London. It is a mesmerising exploration of the intersection between art, technology, and artificial intelligence. Through immersive installations, Anadol invites viewers to experience the beauty and complexity of AI-generated art and data-driven storytelling. Using cutting-edge digital techniques, Anadol transforms raw data into dynamic visual narratives, blurring the boundaries between the physical and virtual worlds, through use of his Large Nature Model.
At the Serpentine North Gallery, Anadol's exhibition captivates audiences with its scale and ambition. From large projections that envelop entire walls to introspective experiences watching the dreams from below on the comfort of bean bags, Anadol pushes the boundaries of traditional exhibition formats, inviting visitors to engage with art in new digital formats. The exhibition serves as a testament to the transformative power of technology in shaping our perception of art and reality.
I had visited a similar exhibit by Anadol at the Saatchi in 2022. It was housed inside a giant glass box and had a controlled temperature and a woody scent created by the machine itself, providing extra layers of sensory experience. This aspect was missing from the current display, and I felt it lacked something because of this.
In essence, Anadol's exhibitions at the Serpentine North Gallery and the Saatchi Gallery serve as complementary chapters in his ongoing exploration of the potential of technology to redefine our relationship with art and the world around us. While each exhibition may offer a unique perspective or emphasis, they both reflect Anadol's visionary approach to art-making and his commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression in the digital age.
