Principles of Design

Discussing the rules of design, and putting these into use with a quick Photoshop poster workshop.

 

Things to consider:

 

  1. Visibility - colour, eye catching, scale, patterns, image, aesthetics, slogan

  2. Findability - where, when

  3. Learnability - what, why, QR, website, contact, logos/sponsorship

  4. Marketing

 

 

7 Principles of Design:

 

  1. Balance

  2. Contrast

  3. Emphasis

  4. Movement

  5. Scale/Proportions

  6. Rhythm/Repetition

  7. Unity/Gestalt

 

 

Now you know the rules you can BREAK THEM!!!

Poster Creation - (For Exhibition)

Digital is RGB - Print is CYM

Unsplash website - Free images

 

 


Masking Tools:

 

 

Paste image into canvas - pick plain image with easily contrasting colour

 

 

Mask Layer, and removed background with brush and/or selection tools

Adjust edges of mask and feather until satisfied

 

 

Add in background colour (Using gradient fill and adjusting settings until happy

 

 

Repeat bike guy by duplicating layers - changing blend modes/opacities

Add in text - This can be shaped using the warp tool when in text tool mode

Layer in mask if you want to remove text in places, or layer up masking with image

 

 

More changes can be made by adding in adjustment layers

 


Utilise Shape tool to highlight text information.

To define text path, use shape, then text tool on that shape
