Essay Notes - We do not live in a vacuum.

Updated: May 6

We do not live in a vacuum - we cannot live without being influenced by others

Choose a designer/ Artist/ maker within your chosen field of study

whose work you admire and/or has influenced your own approach to

design and creative practice.

We do not live in a vacuum, so how does your chosen artist/designer/

maker represent and advance practice in their epoch?

You are expected to present your discourse through both a short 10

minute presentation and a research study (essay) of 2000 words

equivalent. It is useful to create a skeleton plan or mind map of what

you intend to discuss before you start, based on the following;

(NO PRESENTATION)

• Introduce your subject by contextualizing them. What is the

socio-historical background of the period in which they

work? What is the thinking (zeitgeist) of the time? What

major world events have altered human perception and

therefore could influence art/ design philosophies?

Mention other artists/ designers of note and discuss/

illustrate examples of other contemporary works – did your

subject work within or against the current trends of thought

or style?

• Illustrate and discuss their chronological development

comparing and contrasting where appropriate with other

artists/ designers from the same period.

• Conclude by summarising the characteristics of their work

and how they have influenced others – how have they

pushed the boundaries of creative practice?

• Your accompanying hardcopy is an extension of your

presentation. It should be illustrated so it makes sense to

cut and paste the illustrations from your presentation into

the written text. (Illustration is okay as long as Harvard referenced) (can put links)

• Consider carefully the presentation quality of your

hardcopy. It should include a title page with name, date and

module number and title… list of illustrations, bibliography
