After finalizing the design for my digital artwork, I began refining my illustration techniques using Adobe Fresco.
I started by copying individual elements from my second sketch onto a new canvas and used them as a reference. First, I outlined the subject using Vector layers, alternating between G-Pen and Drawing Pen to achieve the desired strokes. Then, I created a new vector layer underneath the outline, used it as a reference, and filled in the colors using the Fill tool, matching the colors I had previously used with the eyedropper tool.
Next, I added highlights and shadows on another vector layer to give depth to the drawing, specifically focusing on the hair and facial features.
Once I was satisfied with the drawing, I sketched the shape for the shadow using a pink pencil brush. Then, I created a mask layer from this sketch, using black/white pixel brush to distress the edges. I then started to piece together my terms screenshots using the same method as my previous experimentation, except this time adding a copy of the layer mask to each terms layer. I also reused some T&Cs layers from the previous file to save time.
Once I was happy, I sketched the shape for the shadow in a pink pencil brush. I then created a mask layer from this sketch, and masked around the contents of this, leaving a rough edge. I then started sticking together my terms as in my previous experimentation, this time layering each item under a copy of the layer mask. I copied some more T&Cs layers from the previous file to save time.
I decided to incorporate the speech bubble from the previous sketch, made it visible, and filled it with white. To add more depth to the image, I changed the background to a light grey, which contrasted well with the speech bubble. Finally, I softened the edges of the shadow with a soft round brush, adding depth and texture to the shadow, highlighting its transient nature.
I've enjoyed developing my illustration techniques and have found a new love for drawing on the iPad. If I could develop this piece further, I would take it out of the digital world and into 3D. I hope to turn this into a projection or play with lights and shadows, just like my original project proposal and artist research suggested. I've loved learning about new digital artists and look forward to developing my ideas around this subject in the future.
