Updated: May 6

After being inspired by Woolner's work at Exeter Contemporary Open, I conducted some further research into his practice, and him as an artist.

Tom Woolner's artistic approach is rooted in embracing chance encounters, fostering spontaneity, and allowing for organic growth in his work. Even with waste materials, he transforms them into meaningful pieces of art, recognizing the value in subconscious moments. His multimedia exploration enables him to delve into diverse facets of ideas and concepts.

Woolner's projects, influenced by his use of materials, traverse themes from anatomical reflections on bodies and hospitals to contemplations of weather systems and boats. Each piece weaves a unique narrative, combining individual direction with bold, comical elements. Describing his works as excerpts of a larger story, Woolner advises against overly dissecting the overall narrative. Instead, he suggests focusing on the passage of time infused with a sense of calmness, serenity, and a touch of sadness or entropy. The artworks strike a balance between being simultaneously voluptuous and sensual, yet maintaining a level of gross abjectivity.

The strategic use of materials evokes a semblance of Fresco painting styles, yet Woolner's deceptive use of plastics and styrofoams introduces a drearier passivity and a sense of repetition that sets his work apart.
